Clean runs, healthy dogs, happy clients
For dog daycares, boarding kennels, groomers and vet clinics, the outdoor run is where a lot of the action happens. Dogs play, rest and go to the toilet there, often many dogs in a single day. Keeping that space clean is one of the most important parts of running a safe and reputable business.
Clients notice hygiene. A fresh-smelling, tidy run reassures owners that their dog is in good hands. A smelly or messy one can lose you clients quickly, and an outbreak of illness can do far more damage. This guide covers the essentials of keeping outdoor runs clean and healthy.
How often should dog daycare runs be cleaned?
Waste should be removed as soon as possible, ideally straight after each dog goes. In a busy daycare, that means someone on spot-clean duty throughout the day, not just at closing time.
On top of spot cleaning, outdoor runs need a full clean and disinfect at least daily, and more often during busy periods or wet weather. Grass and bark areas need a thorough scoop each day, as waste is easier to miss and harder to remove than on hard surfaces.
Many businesses set a written cleaning schedule so every staff member knows what's expected and when. It's also a useful record if clients or inspectors ask how hygiene is managed.
How do you disinfect a dog run for parvo?
Parvovirus is one of the biggest risks in any multi-dog facility. It's highly contagious, spreads through faeces and can survive in the environment for a long time, especially in shaded, damp areas.
Disinfecting effectively comes down to a few steps:
- Remove all visible waste and organic matter first, as disinfectants work poorly on dirty surfaces
- Wash the area with detergent and water
- Apply a disinfectant that is labelled as effective against parvovirus
- Leave it on for the full contact time listed on the label
- Rinse if required and let the area dry before dogs return
Hard, non-porous surfaces such as sealed concrete are much easier to disinfect than grass, soil or bark. If you have a suspected parvo case, talk to your vet about the right products and process for your facility.
Can dogs catch giardia from shared play areas?
Yes. Giardia is a parasite spread through contaminated faeces, water and surfaces, and it's common in places where many dogs share the same space. Dogs pick it up by sniffing, licking or drinking from contaminated areas.
Roundworm, hookworm and whipworm can spread in a similar way. Some parasite eggs can survive in soil for a long time, which makes grassy toilet areas a particular concern.
Prompt waste removal is the single most effective defence. Combine it with fresh, clean water bowls, cleaning shared toys and equipment, and requiring clients to keep worming and vaccinations up to date.
How do you stop smells in outdoor dog runs?
Smell builds up when urine and waste soak into porous surfaces. Concrete, pavers, bark and soil can all hold odour, especially in warm weather.
- Scoop throughout the day so waste doesn't sit
- Hose hard surfaces daily and scrub weekly
- Use an enzyme-based cleaner on urine-soaked areas
- Replace bark or gravel in toilet areas regularly
- Improve drainage so water and urine don't pool
Good airflow and sunlight help too. Shaded corners that never dry out are often where smells and bacteria hang around longest.
How do you stop germs spreading between areas?
Cross-contamination is an easy mistake to make. Staff move between runs, reception, grooming tables and the street, and anything on their shoes or tools goes with them.
Keep separate cleaning equipment for toilet areas and other spaces, and disinfect scoops, rakes and buckets regularly. Footbaths or dedicated footwear for run areas can help in larger facilities.
We follow the same principle in our own work. Our scoops, rakes and buckets are disinfected after every property, because we're moving between yards all day and don't want to carry anything from one dog's home to another.
A Wellington groomer asked us to keep the small grass strip out the front clear on a set day each week, where dogs relieve themselves before and after appointments. It’s the first thing customers see when they arrive, and she wanted it to match the standard inside the salon.
In another case, a Hutt Valley doggy daycare has us clear its outdoor play yard twice a week. The owner said her staff now spend that time with the dogs instead of on poo duty, and parents dropping off in the morning notice the yard looks and smells cleaner.
What's the best surface for an outdoor dog run?
The easiest surfaces to keep clean are hard and non-porous, such as sealed concrete with good drainage and a slight fall so water runs off. They can be scrubbed, disinfected and dried quickly, which makes them the safest choice for toilet areas and high-traffic zones.
Grass looks inviting and is comfortable for dogs, but it's very hard to disinfect and can hold parasites in the soil. In busy runs it also wears out fast. Bark and pea gravel drain well and are kinder on paws than concrete, but they need replacing regularly and waste can be harder to spot.
Many facilities use a combination: sealed concrete for toilet and feeding areas, and grass or artificial turf for play. Artificial turf needs a good drainage base and regular enzyme treatment to stop urine smells building up underneath. Whatever the surface, a consistent cleaning routine matters more than the material itself.
Whatever surface you have, check it regularly for cracks, pooling water or worn patches. Damaged surfaces trap waste and bacteria, and they're often where smells start. Fixing small problems early keeps cleaning quick and effective.
Hygiene that clients can see
A clean outdoor run is good for the dogs, good for your staff and good for business. Prompt waste removal, a regular disinfecting routine and attention to cross-contamination keep illness risks low and clients confident.
